Numbered beat
A note here reinforces the pulse and makes the loop easy to locate.
Keep pitch fixed. Change only when the note sounds—and hear a plain pulse turn into a game-ready rhythmic hook.
Rhythm. Pitch controls how high or low it sounds. If that took effort to recall, good—that effort strengthens memory. Review Lesson 1’s three parts only if you need it.
Your bar still has four beats, each divided into 1 e & a. The numbered slots—steps 1, 5, 9, and 13—line up with the counting pulse. Beat 1 is the clearest start of the bar; in quadruple meter, beat 3 has secondary strength. Open Music Theory diagrams this hierarchy.

An intentional span of silence. It separates attacks and gives a pattern shape.
A note between beat starts can pull the rhythm forward or across the pulse.
Rhythm is a pattern of durations; rests explicitly represent silence. See Open Music Theory’s rhythmic values and rests. When expected strong-beat activity shifts to weaker parts of the beat, the result is syncopation. Its syncopation guide shows the same on-beat-to-offbeat shift you will hear below.
Press Play and tap your foot on 1, 2, 3, 4. Switch among the three patterns without changing your foot tap. Every green square plays the same C; only timing changes.
Click any square to toggle the C note. The quiet low pulse marks 1, 2, 3, 4; beat 1 is slightly stronger.
Listen for function, not “better.” On-beat feels settled. Offbeat feels buoyant because every note lands between foot taps. Mixed keeps the bar readable while adding motion.
Press Clear. Do not choose pitches yet. Your job is to make one C interesting enough that you could clap it back.
The checker tests the recipe. Your ears decide whether the groove is memorable.
After the loop stops, tap your pattern from memory. Then answer aloud: What makes an anchor? What does a rest contribute? What changed between the on-beat and offbeat presets?
