Music theory separates when a sound happens from which pitch sounds. Meter groups the pulse into recurring beats; a scale organizes a collection of pitches. Open Music Theory explains meter, and its scale reference defines scales and the tonic.

The six rows below are the five pitches of C minor pentatonic—C, E♭, F, G, B♭—plus C again one octave higher. Pentatonic simply means “five-note.” Ableton's interactive explanation shows how the minor pentatonic comes from a minor scale.

The tonic is the pitch a scale is based on. Ending on it often creates a sense of return, which is useful at a loop boundary. It is a starting technique, not a law. Your loop may sound playful, tense, sneaky, or strange depending on its rhythm and contour.
Without looking back, say what each word controls: beat, pitch, scale, tonic. Tomorrow, rebuild a different loop from a blank grid. That small delay turns recognition into memory.
